Commissions
Commissions:
Commissions are special to me. I do two types. The first type is 'supersizing' an existing painting to your specifications. The second is a custom commission from one or more photos that you provide. I especially love to do commissions where I collaborate with you to bring your artistic vision to life. I also welcome designers and consultants to help you find the perfect art for your clients.
Here's a recent custom commission, it measures 36"x48". The client wanted a painting for his vacation home that reminded him of his Spring bike ride in the Eastern Sierras.
Here's the finished painting on the wall with custom black/silver trim floater frame:
Here's how the process works.
It starts with a photo you provide and a discussion of how you would like to see the piece look, favorite colors, and the intended wall space. From there I will edit the photo to enhance the color and give it the 'Cindy' treatment.
Next, I will do a visual mockup on the wall so we can decide what the best size will be for the piece. Based on measurements, I grid out the space in one foot increments and we can experiment to see what size has the most impact. Since this painting will be the focal point of the room, we decided on 3 feet by 4 feet.
I then start working on preliminary sketches, color swatches, and one or more small studies, depending on the complexity. For this project, i did a small sketch, color study, and then a full 8"x10" study which the client also got to keep.
Here's the sketch and initial color study. We decided to make the view more panoramic and to make the flowers more yellow and violet.
After the changes were approved, I got to work on the full 8"x10" study. This allows me to work out any design issues, finalize the color palette, and to make sure the painting 'reads' well.
Once we agree on the final specifications, I start on the final piece. Throughout the process, I share my progress, and you have the opportunity to request changes. This in progress phase shows a lot of the underpainting which will get covered by further details and glazing to develop depth and luminosity, my specialty! You can see how large the painting is compared to the small study.
Once the final painting is completed, it will need a few weeks to dry. I then apply a coat of UV varnish to bring out the color and protect your investment, set up custom framing if desired, and then, shipping/delivery of the final piece. Here's a short clip to show how varnish lights up the color!
Delivery of your painting can happen in several ways. If you use my preferred framer, Randy Higbee gallery, we can meet at the gallery and choose the frame together. The gallery will then deliver the framed painting to your location. If you choose to frame it yourself and are local to SoCal, I am happy to deliver. If you are remote, we can arrange for packing and shipping. I use a variety of shippers, depending on the size of the piece.
I look forward to collaborating with you and helping you to bring a beautiful piece of custom art into your home!
