FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I purchase a painting?
Transforming your home with art that you love is easy. If the piece is available on my web site, you can use the shopping cart to purchase directly on my site via Paypal and I will calculate shipping for you. I can optionally add a frame if one is not shown. See below for links to my framer. Custom frames including framing are $100 for small frames (8'x10" or under), and variable for larger sizes. Once I get the order, I will ship it out as soon as possible. Sometimes if I am traveling, there may be a delay. If you would like the piece in a different size, reach out and let me know which size and we can discuss a price and timing. I am also happy to advise you on art placement. I even have a Live View button and see how the piece would look in your home real time. If you don't use Paypal, let me know and we can discuss other payment methods. I also take Zelle, Venmo and credit cards through Square.
How do you ship paintings?
Depending on the size, I ship smaller paintings via commercial carriers including USPS, Fedex, and UPS. For larger pieces, I work with a specialty art shipper to make sure your piece is well packaged and arrives in great condition.
What kind of frames do you use?
I work primarily with Randy Higbee Gallery, who has been my framer for over 10 years. They offer a wide variety of handmade frames that are high quality and very reasonably priced. You can view their ready made frames here. I am happy to consult on your framing needs, help you select a frame, and have the piece framed for you.
What if I purchase a painting and it doesn't work in the space or doesn't look like I expected?
With the exception of commissioned pieces, I offer a 100% money back guarantee. You are welcome to return the painting for a refund or exchange it for another within 60 days. I also encourage you to try the "Live View" to see how the painting would look in your space.
I love one of your paintings but it's too small. Would you paint something for me in a larger size?
Yes! I am happy to recreate a painting for you in the size that you need. For example, one collector really liked a 9"x12" painting that I had in a show but he wanted a really large version so I created a 36"x48" version. The largest size available is 48"x72".
What is a plein air painting?
"Plein air" means outdoors in French and refers to painting in the outdoors on location. Painting outdoors presents many challenges including changing light and weather, wind, insects, and sometimes, animals strolling by. And yes, I've had flocks of sheep and even a bison walk by when I was out painting. No bears yet but I do carry bear spray just in case!
I don't have a budget for a painting right now but I love your work. Are there lower priced offerings available?
I sympathize with your situation. Twice a year, I offer specials on pieces that need to find a new home as well as small works. On occasion, I sell high quality giclee prints. Feel free to reach out for details. I also offer collector discounts for multiple pieces.
Tell us about your Jeep? How is it equipped and how are you able to go off-road for weeks and months?
We have a 2020 Jeep Rubicon named ROVERR that has been modified extensively for off-road and overland travel, 80,000 miles to date.
We sleep in a Bush Company roof top tent with a fan, heated blankets, lighting, and charger plugs. We power everything with three 175 watt Renogy solar panels hooked up to a Redarc controller and a three Lithium batteries so we are able to power all our devices as well as our Dometic fridge without draining our batteries. The fridge even makes tiny ice cubes! On occasion when the weather is not cooperating, we use our Honda generator for an extra power boost.
We have a custom drawer system from American Adventure Labs that stores all our food and kitchen supplies. We carry extensive recovery gear including a winch, traction boards, and tow straps, just in case. Yes, we have used all of them (long story). And did I mention tools and spare parts? Thankfully my partner Kevin is an engineer so he is great with any unforeseen events.
A first aid kit is critical for back country adventures, as is bear spray and an emergency communication device such as InReach. We now have Starlink so internet is available almost everywhere we camp. We still carry a Weboost cell signal booster on our Jeep for when we are moving around since Starlink is only used at camp.
We can typically go about a week at a time before re-supply although we typically will do so every 3-4 days. Depending on the trip, we also take both fly fishing and spin gear and our twin NRS inflatable kayaks. In 2022, we purchased an off-road utility trailer from Turtleback Trailers, which now gives us hot and cold running water, sink and stove, and even an outdoor shower. The tent is now mounted on the trailer so we don't have to break camp when we go explore. The trailer gives us more space and comfort. This year, I hope to paint from our kayak as well as from land as we venture up to Alaska.
What's in your painting kit? Favorite supplies?
For my painting kit, I need to travel light so I use a Serui carbon fiber tripod along with a U.Go large sized pochade with side trays. Everything fits in small daypack including my completed paintings. I use Raymar panels because they are lightweight, have a great painting surface, and are archival quality. Sourcetek panels are also great. In the studio I am more apt to use Ampersand Gessobord as it works beautifully with glazes and provides an ultra smooth surface. I love Rosemary brushes, they are the finest quality. I can't leave home without a Mundy Mop! I am also fond of Princeton Aspen's. My paints are always top grade artist oil paints and include Michael Harding, Williamsburg, Gamblin, and Old Holland. I am very partial to specific colors from specific brands so I usually have an assortment of brands on my palette. For mediums, I am partial to Rublev's Oleogel and Italian Varnish (not a varnish but a medium). Raymar makes a great paint storage box and I use these in various sizes. Feel free to reach out and ask questions, I'm happy to discuss!
Where do you usually travel?
We travel approximately 20,000 miles per year and primarily do what's called 'dispersed camping'- that means camping outside of a formal campground, frequently in the wilderness and beyond the reach of most vehicles. We especially love to spend time in Utah, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana, places that have epic scenery and millions of acres of public land with remote trails to explore. We use apps such as Gaia GPS and Avenza for navigation but there's nothing better than finding a knowledgeable forest ranger to help us find epic campsites.
